Posting Homework for Online Classes

Most classes will have homework assigned, and since the class is online, you'll need a place to post homework for critique and credit. However, if you do not know how to make a web page, or you do not have web space of your own, there are many alternatives available in the form of free or low cost web space and free or low cost photo galleries. I have compiled a list to make your search a little easier, and if you have a favorite that is not listed here, please let me know and it will be added.

Free servers:

There are a lot of free web hosts or photo album sites on the net, although most will put ads on your page. Still, they are free and that's good! If you are really new to all this, you may prefer the photo galleries as they take care of sizing images and such for you.

Your own ISP: most ISP's provide some web space with your account. You will have to create the page yourself and upload using FTP. If you do not know how to do that, then check out these as most of them have some sort of Sitebuilder to do the HTML and uploads for you:

50megs.com
Freeservers.com
Free Pro Hosting
Sphosting.com
Yahoo-Geocites
Tripod
has been removed from the list of recommended free sites. Because of silly "Swat the Fly" and other popups that appear despite a popup blocker and will not close even with the close "X" on the window, and which stay planted firmly in front of the very content I need to see to view and critique homework, I DO NOT recommend Tripod for homework postings. If you are used to Tripod and want to use it that's fine; I just don't recommend it, and I have a lot of trouble getting their pages to load. It often takes an hour or more (or never) for tripod pages to load for me. I know it works for most people but apparently my ISP has issues with it, and you may find I cannot see your work if you do use Tripod.

Paid space:

There are also web galleries you can use:

You may notice there are several popular online galleries that are not listed here. There are two reasons for this: they either require me to join their site to see images posted there, or I am often unable to load pages from these galleries, and if the pages don't load, I can't see your work. I don't know if it is my ISP or my computers (but since it happens with all 5 of the computers I use daily, I doubt it is the computer), but one of the sites listed below will work best for class homework. Note please that I very often cannot load My Photo Album or Photobucket or Tripod pages, so if you use one of these I may not be able to see your work.

Picasa Web Albums: Go to picasaweb.google.com to download the free Picasa software and learn to make web albums. Google bought Picasa and has since expanded it into a very nice free service and photo organizational software. This is my first choice since Yahoo went to their new format, and even moreso since Yahoo is discontinuing their photo storage and album service in the fall of 2007. Versions for Mac, Windows (including Vista) and Linux. You need to have a free Google account to use the album feature.

Flickr: http://www.flickr.com
Yahoo Photos is being discontinued; since Yahoo also owns Flickr, use Flickr instead.
Pbase: http://www.pbase.com
Not free but very reasonably priced. Many students use this and are very pleased with it.
SmugMug: http://www.smugmug.com/price/
Prices from $29.95 to $99.95 annually depending on the plan you choose.
Fotopic.net: http://www.fotopic.net/register
This is free and offers about 250mb of space in gallery format
AloofPhoto.com:    http://www.aloofphoto.com
This is a free gallery-format service and offers about 250mb of space
Images Up: http://www.imagesup.com
$4.95 a month and up, unlimited space
Webshots
