Saving Custom Styles in Illustrator 9 and 10
Want more Styles in Illustrator? You can make your own and save them
to use later.
To make them yourself, set up objects with the strokes and fills
you want to save as styles. Drag each of them to the styles palette.
Do not delete them from the page yet.
Your styles palette will look something like this:
On the Styles palette, click the options triangle and choose "Select
all unused".
This is an important step! You
may think the styles you made are used but they aren't yet...you
must make new objects and USE THE NEW STYLES!
The unused styles are selected. Click the trash can at the bottom
of the pallette and say yes when asked if you want to delete the
selected styles.
Now your styles palette will look something like this one:
We need to do the same thing for brushes, swatches and symbols
(symbols are in AI 10 only).
- On the Swatches palette, click the options triangle and
choose "Select all unused". Then click the trash
can at the bottom of the pallette and say yes when asked
if you want to delete the selected swatches.
- On the Brushes palette, click the options triangle and
choose "Select all unused". Then click the trash
can at the bottom of the pallette and say yes when asked
if you want to delete the selected brushes.
- AI 10 only: On the Symbols
palette, click the options triangle and choose "Select
all unused". Then click the trash can at the bottom
of the pallette and say yes when asked if you want to delete the
selected symbols.
You will now have only items used in the document in the palette.
You can now delete the objects using the styles from the page. The
new styles are stored in the styles palette.
Save the file where you can find it and give it a descriptive
name.
Close the file. The file MUST
be closed to load the styles.
