Split Rock Light Station
near Beaver Bay, Minnesota
Lake Superior

Split Rock Light Station sits high on a cliff near Beaver Bay, Minnesota, 130 feet above the rocky North Shore of Lake Superior. This is one of the most beautiful and picturesque lighthouses in the world due to it's design and location. You can reach the shore via 174 steps. Down is OK. It's coming back up that gets you!

When the light was built there was no road on top of the cliff, and all materials and supplies were hoisted from boats. The hoist site and tram foundation stones are still there.

Split Rock is now a State Park and has been lovingly restored. The first time I saw this light in 1974, it was falling apart, abandoned and full of broken windows. One could only imagine how it must have been at one time. To see it restored from that state and given to the public to enjoy, along with many acres of trails and lakeshore, camping areas, and interpretive center, is really wonderful.
