Sizing Images from a Digital Camera

The original image as it came from the camera is:

Change the dpi to 300 and DO NOT resample. The photo will print at 5.3" x 4" and look great.

Save them both as an uncompressed tif. What's the difference in file size? Nothing. They are both 5,641KB in size. We didn't change anything but the way the computer reads them.

Jpgs are compressed. The original file was 996KB. So as a tif it is larger but I can pull it off the cd and mess with it to my heart's content and not lose any information.

If you resize it tp 4X6 at 72dpi, it will be 4X6 on screen, and it must be resampled so information will be lost and cannot be recovered. The file size for minimum compression, that is the best jpg I can save, is 215K. BUT if you ever do what to print them, the print size will be about 1.4" by 1.08".

If I were you I would simply change the resolution to 300, and not resample. Save as an uncompressed tif, and burn to the cd. The file sizes are large but you or anyone you give them to has more options down the road.
